| Layout of conventional road guide signs (shown in section
3-30 to 3-33 in the 2000 Standard Highway Signs book with Series
D alphabet), will require different interline proportion when using
ClearviewHwy3-W with mixed case. This spacing is adjusted to accommodate
the descenders (Figure 20). An alternate version is shown with a
line separating each destination to aid visual separation for each
destination. |

The example below documents
the layout of a conventional road guide sign (shown in section 3-30
to 3-33 in the 2000 Standard Highway Signs book with Series D alphabet).
Use of ClearviewHwy® 3-W
requires different interline proportion when used with mixed case
to consistently accommodate descending characters.

The following examples with ClearviewHwy
3-W are illustrated using proportional grid based on X, in which
X is the capital letter height of the primary legend. This simplified
system for layout documentation could allow for greater uniformity
for all types of guide and motorist service signs in the MUTCD and
Standard Highway Signs book. An advantage of this system is that
a specific grid format can be used for signs with various primary
legend sizes. A significant benefit is that all applications reflect
the same relationship between figure an field regardless of the size
of the sign, with border thickness (.166X), corner radius (.33X)
and arrow (1.5X) all being a percentage of X.

MUTCD and SHS book. |
